A SUPER SUNDAY FOR FEEDING THE HUNGRY
First Sunday in February
The first Sunday of February has become a Super Sunday of tradition for Orchard’s youth in mission. Not just because there’s a football game – but because our youth join together with groups all over the country to raise money to feed the homeless in our local areas. Nationally, we raise over $7M each year that goes directly to feed the hungry in our own communities. How do the youth of Orchard participate?
Our Fusion Senior High will be making subs to order that can be picked up immediately after the worship service that day. We take the profits from this sale and use them to make 400 lunches for Detroit area homeless during FROG Week in August. These lunches are distributed by the NOAH Project out of Central United Methodist Church in downtown Detroit.
SOUP POT COLLECTIONS – Our JAM group of Junior High kids will be standing outside the worship service collecting loose change donations which will be distributed to Gleaners and Hospitality House.
YOUTH MISSION & MINISTRY - SERVING OTHERS
An important expression of our faith is how we reach out and serve others. Over the course of the year both JAM and Fusion have many opportunities to participate in local service projects coordinated by Orchard and by the Youth Leadership staff. In addition, we offer a larger summer experience for both JAM and Fusion (click the picture to the left to see the video from the 2016 Fusion Mission Trip to Memphis, TN).
F.R.O.G. Week – Friends Reaching Out for God
Leader: Kelly Sheckell
Usually offered the 2nd week of August, F.R.O.G. Week is geared for students who are entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. This half-day program exposes students to a wide variety of service needs in our local and surrounding communities. Students may work at a food bank, homeless shelter, make lunches for Detroit homeless, send packages and letters to deployed troops, or visit a nursing home. At the end of the week a fun activity is planned for the whole team.
Parent chaperones and drivers are needed to support this program. For more information contact Kelly or click on the link for forms and information.
Fusion Mission Trip – A work service project for Senior High students
Leader: Nick Bonsky
Mission Trip is for students who have completed grades 9-12. Each year we go to a different part of the country to do home repairs and improvements for people in need. By changing our destination each year, we learn a little bit about poverty and living conditions of the poor in different parts of our country.
Preparation for the annual Mission Trip begins right at the beginning of the year as we discuss Jesus’ calling to care for the poor. We spend the year building a team, making plans, raising funds, and preparing ourselves for the experience ahead.
For all the rustic conditions and hard work, each and every student who has ever gone on Mission Trip will tell you that it was the very best experience of their life. You will work hard, play hard, pray hard, worship intently, and be transformed by the whole amazing experience!
The trip is usually scheduled for the 3rd week of June, but dates vary from year to year. This year their trip was to Memphis, TN to do urban home repair and a variety of other experiences in that area, including working in a soup kitchen and participating in variuos worship opportunities. Plans for the next year's great mission opportunity begin almost immediately after the current year's trip is complete. check back and find our where you can get connected!
